[Interview excerpt; paraphrased]

Chuy : When did you discover you wanted to do beats?

Jermaine: I was 15 and I was introduced to break beats, that a break in any record. I heard a DJ play a beat, and I started rapping...from that point I started rapping at that point over break beats. I took the ideas to a producer and told him my Idea. I wanted to sample a beat and he didn't really no how to do that... he replayed it and it didn't sound nothing like I wanted, so I decided I needed to learn how to do this so I could do what I do..."

Chuy: So you know what happened when you put out Kriss Kross, It was incredible. Did you know it was going to be that big when it came out?

Jermaine: Not as big as it became but I knew it was going to be big just because there was nothing out like it. I actually cam here to SF and that's when I knew it was as big as it was. They used to have a convention called the Gaven Convention and we came for the first time from Atlanta. I saw there reaction on the crowd and it was even larger than Cypress Hill. I didn't know what that meant but I knew it felt bigger than anything that I had ever been a part of.

Chuy: At that point did people start looking for you to produce?

Jermaine: No I was 17 when I made this record so in the industry at the time 17 yer old producers didn't exist and I was the first producer under the age of 21 to have a number 1 hit record but they didn't care no one knew who i was they just thought I got Lucky...

"We put out Kriss Kross and sold 8 million records."

Jermaine: I had an idea that I was gonna have my own record label and I met a group of girl Excape and told them I was going to sign them but at the time I didn't have a deal, I got a deal and I signed them. I knew how well the girls sang and I wanted to show people I could do more than sample, it was my chance to show people that I could make live music.
